The Reality of Christmas

✍️ Mufti Mohammed Kafeel Ahmed

After one day, it will be *25th December,* when the whole world will be celebrating Christmas. Sadly, many Muslims also take part in this festival due to lack of awareness. Christmas is an innovation invented by Christians in their religion, and every part of it is completely against divine revelation. Since Christmas is a human-made innovation, it started in different places and in different ways. Today, as the whole world has become like one village, all these practices have been combined into one festival.

Christmas in the Present Time

According to the present Christian belief, on 25th December, Jesus (Isa), the son of God (according to their belief), was born. They believe that he sacrificed himself to cleanse humanity from original sin. Therefore, on this day, praises are sung for Jesus, prayers are offered, and the day is celebrated as a festival of joy. With the passage of time, candles, Christmas trees, alcohol, and singing were added to this festival. Each of these additions has its own history. In different regions, these things were included in Christmas for worldly benefits and commercial gains.

Christmas and Islam

Islam presents a very clear and firm belief regarding Prophet Jesus (Isa) عليه السلام. Without accepting this Islamic belief, the foundation of Christianity itself becomes weak.

1) The birth of Isa عليه السلام did not take place in December.

Rather, it took place in the month of July. The Qur’an describes the incident of Maryam (Mary) at the time of the birth of Isa عليه السلام:

“And shake towards yourself the trunk of the date-palm; it will drop upon you fresh, ripe dates.”

The birth of Isa عليه السلام took place in Palestine, where dates ripen in the month of July, not in December. This Qur’anic verse clearly shows that his birth could not have occurred in December.

As for fixing the date as 25th December, the reason was political and financial. In the third century, a Roman ruler needed financial support, which he could get from Christian traders. He accepted Christianity and declared it the state religion. Since on 25th December people in the Roman Empire used to worship various Greek gods, to please the public, the birth of Isa عليه السلام was also declared to be celebrated on the same day.

2) Isa عليه السلام is the servant of Allah, not the son of Allah.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“They say: The Most Merciful has taken a son. Indeed, you have said a very terrible thing. The Skys are about to burst, the earth to split apart, and the mountains to fall down in destruction.” (Surah Maryam 88–90)

Allah also says:

“He neither begets nor is He begotten.” (Surah Al-Ikhlas: 3)

How can a festival based on such a false belief be accepted? How can actions that clearly go against the explicit verses of the Qur’an be adopted?

The Night of Christmas

On Christmas, the highest amount of alcohol is consumed in the world. There are maximum violations of traffic rules, maximum cases of adultery, maximum oppression of women, and extreme waste of wealth. Even man-made religions do not permit such sins, then how can a divine religion allow them? This is clearly the outcome of people who worship their desires, and such desire-driven people across the world adopt these practices.

Therefore, Muslims must protect themselves from this false festival and also protect their children from it. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever imitates a people becomes one of them.”

When a nation abandons its own culture and identity and adopts the culture of others, it loses its own identity.

May Allah protect us all. Ameen.
